coming to a street fair near you

kettlecornnyc

who loves kettle corn?  personally, my sister's ex "boyfriend"'s company makes it the best.

he currently sells it on the streets of new york city but that may change in the near future.  for now here is a link to his street fair schedule.

http://kettlecornnyc.com/_wsn/page3.html

the original one is the best flavor by far. if you see a bald dude manning the kettle, that's probably, Ken.  If you see a short asian girl manning the sales table, that's probably my sister, Wendy.

Accept no Substitutes.

Tribeca Film Festival - New Picks!!!

These are the screenings i've managed to get tix to. I've come to realize that if you aren't going to a premiere or a red carpet event, the screenings "at" the film festival are just overpriced indie movies. Since I have four movies, i'm gonna take four different people. I am still excepting submissions for "dates" so as long as you reply back with a comment as to what movie you want to watch and why you want to watch it.  I won't gender discriminate on any guys that want to see Blue State =P.

tff-falafel Falafel
2006 | 83 min | France , Lebanon
Thur, April 26 10:00PM

Everything bad that can happen on the way to a party happens to easygoing young Tou in this chronicle of a nighttime trip though Beirut, permeated by the smell of falafel frying at neon-lit stands. Flipping between the playful youth and scenes of unexpected danger, Kammoun creates a kind of Lebanese After Hours.

tff-bluestate Blue State
2006 | 90 min | US
Mon, April 30 8:00PM

After Bush's re-election in 2004, John (Breckin Meyer), a distraught Democrat, decides to move to Canada after receiving a call from 'Marry-a-Canadian,' established to help disgruntled liberals 'escape' from the U.S. When Chloe (Anna Paquin) answers his ad, he soon finds that the misadventures of the open highway bring them closer in this lighthearted road-trip tale.

tff-myfather My Father, My Lord (World Narrative Feature Comp)
2006 | 72 mins | US
Tue, May 1 7:00PM

This powerful and heartbreaking film takes a look at the price that may be exacted by a rigid observation of religious tenets. Its central character, a respected rabbi in an ultra-Orthodox community -- who is also a father and husband -- is forced to come to terms with the demands of his faith and the welfare of his own family.

tff-where Where God Left His Shoes
2007 | 99 mins | US
Wed, May 2 10:00PM

Frank Diaz (John Leguizamo) and his family have been living in a homeless shelter for months. But on Christmas Eve, they receive the best gift possible-the chance for an apartment. To get it, Frank needs a job, so he and his stepson go on the hunt for employment. This heartwarming tale shows the compassion of a family that comes together when all else feels lost.

These are the other movies I thought were interesting but couldn't get tickets to.  They'll most likely hit some type of main stream distribution b/c of the star power behind them.

tff-air The Air I Breathe
2007 | 97 mins | US

A businessman (Forest Whitaker) bets his life on a horse race, a gangster (Brendan Fraser) sees the future, a pop star (Sarah Michelle Gellar) falls prey to a crime boss (Andy Garcia) and a doctor (Kevin Bacon) must save the love of his life. Based on a Chinese proverb, these four overlapping stories dramatize the four emotional cornerstones of life: happiness, pleasure, sorrow and love.

tff-grandThe Grand
2007 | 95 mins | US

Woody Harrelson goes all-in to save his dead grandfather's hotel-casino from a real estate developer in this hilarious mockumentary. His master plan: to win the world's most famous high stakes tournament, the Grand Championship of Poker. Anteing up the laughs are Werner Herzog, Cheryl Hines, David Cross, Ray Romano and Dennis Farina.

tff-west32 West 32nd (World Narrative Feature Comp)
2007 | 83 mins | US

After hustling his way onto a homicide case, an ambitious young lawyer (John Cho) infiltrates the gritty Korean underworld of New York, searching for clues. When he meets his match in the syndicate, they'll both do anything to get to the top. It's a raw and thrilling race. In English and Korean.

hope for the common man

Tonight on Conan O' Brian, Rosairo Dawson said she was the hugest trek fan and she proceeded to blurt out Klingon with a perfect accent.  There's hope for us.. I mean trek fans in general.

So speaking of Rosairo Dawson, she's in Deathproof. Anyone wanna see it next week sometime?  Speaking of geekdom, wikipedia is awesome.  Here's an exerpt of what a grindhouse is:

A grindhouse is an American term for a theater that mainly showed exploitation films, or is a term to describe the genre of films that played in such theatres (which are also known as "exploitation films"). Grind-houses were known for non-stop programs of B movies, usually consisting of a double feature where two films were shown back to back. Many of these inner-city theatres formerly featured burlesque shows which featured "bump and grind" dancing, leading to the term "grind-house." Beginning in the late 1960s and especially during the 1970s, the subject matter of exploitation films shown in these theaters often included explicit sex, violence, bizarre or perverse plot points, and other taboo content.

my mom is the ultimate pack rat...

What you are about to see may disturb you.  So I don't want to see any comments about how it is gross.  I warned you.  So if that is all you have to say.. then you don't need to post a comment.  Let me give everyone the back story.

I was making some banana cream puffs for the 1rst Annual Hosanna Iron Chef (pot luck).  I wasn't really having a good day because I spent most of the morning running errands and making phone calls to family members down in Florida.  When I finally settled down to cook, it was about 4:30.  I had a ton of ingredients because I was planning to make a 3 course desert (banana fritters, banana hazelnut fried wontons, and banana cream puffs all with complementary dipping sauces: milk chocolate fudge, raspberry sauce, caramel sauce).  I had started out making the cream puffs first because I had to bake those in my mom's toaster oven.  The first batch of shells came out perfectly. The next batch came out way too doughy because apparently you have to bake the shells immediately after you make the dough (which is boiled first).  It makes sense I suppose.  After you boil the dough you have to mix in eggs. My guess is that if you let the dough sit you'll loose some of the aeration aka the "fluffyness" becaues the moisture is evaporating and the eggs are cooking from the hot dough.

So while the shells were cooling I started making the other dishes.  I made the batter for the fritters but I didn't want to fry them yet because the wontons would be fried too so I proceeded to make a couple of wontons.  Time wise I was doing well, it was about 5:30.  After I finished making some wontons, I realized I haven't folded wontons since I was a kid and that the ones I made sucked and would have probably unravelled in the frying oil.  I gave up after about a dozen missed shaped ones because it was about 6:15.  I opted to just finish the cream puffs by filling it with a banana cream.  I cleaned myself up a little bit and was about to dust the cream puffs with some powdered sugar.  That was the only thing I didn't buy "fresh" because I had a lot left over from some things I made for a Christmas party.  I normally don't keep foods in the house because it's dirty and my mom is a terrible pack rat.  Let me back track a bit before I show you what I found.  I obviously needed a mixing bowl.  My mom didn't have any of that instead there were 5 casserole dishes all of the same size and our oven doesn't even work!

So back to what I found.

So I dig out the powdered sugar from the recesses of my kitchen and here is what I found. This is your final warning to turn away if you are squeamish.

ODed Mice

That's right the mouse crawled into the box of powdered sugar and O.D.ed on it.  Since I obviously haven't touched the sugar since December who knows how long it was in there.  So i'm establishing some new rules for myself and my mom.

  • I'm never cooking in my mom's place.
  • I'm going to buy my mom an armada of containers so that we can organize the fridge and the kitchen better.
  • I'm forcing my mom to take a couple of weekend off from Atlantic City to help me clean up and throw out some things.

No wonder my sister turned into such a neat freak when she moved out of the apartment.  I'm so looking forward to moving out into my own place.
